What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a technique designed to enhance your breasts with implants, creating a natural profile that expands and lifts at the same time. There are many reasons women seek breast augmentation, including:

The implants come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and textures, and are carefully chosen depending on your goals. Breast implants come in two general categories, saline and silicone.
Saline: Saline implants are made of a flexible silicone shell (the same as for silicone implants) which the doctor fills to its desired size with sterile saline once they place the implants in your body. The advantages of saline implants include the ability to make a smaller incision in your skin, as well as easier detection when there’s a rupture. In the event of a rupture, the saline leaks out and gets absorbed by your body, and the implant collapses. The disadvantages include the fact that they have a less natural feel than silicone implants and tend to show more rippling, especially if you have minimal breast tissue.
Silicone: Silicone implants generally have a more natural look and feel, especially if you have thin breast tissue. However, they do require a slightly larger incision for placement. Additionally, imaging is generally required to detect a rupture since the silicone tends to keep its shape and isn’t absorbed by your body.
Both saline and silicone implants have been shown to be equally safe for placement by the FDA.
Dr. Patel can place your implants above or below your pectoralis muscle. In most situations, they place them under the muscle because studies have shown a reduced risk for capsular contracture in this position. In addition, the increased tissue over the implant tends to camouflage it more effectively.
What happens during breast augmentation surgery?
During surgery, your doctor makes a small incision in the crease under your breast or along your areola, which is the colored ring of skin surrounding your nipple. Your surgeon then usually lifts your breast tissue and pectoralis muscle to create a pocket for the implant. Once the pocket is irrigated, they place the implants.
At this point, your doctor has you sit up to make sure that everything looks symmetrical and to ensure the implant size is appropriate. Once everything checks out, your surgeon closes the incisions with dissolving sutures and covers the area with tape and skin glue. Once you’re outfitted with a soft surgical bra, you’re free to go home.
What is recovery like following breast augmentation?
Following surgery, you should expect some discomfort, particularly in your pectoralis muscle, which will have muscle soreness like after a workout. You’re able to shower the day after your surgery, but must continue to wear a soft supportive bra without underwire at all other times for the first month following surgery.
After four weeks, you can change to a normal bra as long as your incisions are well healed. Drs. Patel and Wegge also recommend that you avoid all vigorous exercise or activity for the first four to six weeks after surgery, and you should limit how often you lift your arms above your head.
When will I see results after my breast augmentation?
Immediately after surgery, your breast implants generally appear “high and tight.” This is because your tissues, especially the pectoralis muscle, need to stretch to accommodate the new implant. In one to three months, your shape rounds out as the swelling goes down and your implants drop and settle.
