The frame-work of the ear is made of cartilage which can be misshapen in many ways. Sometimes the ears are prominent (stick out from the head), sometimes the natural folds are missing, or the top of the ear is cupped or folded. The appearance of the ear can thus be improved be re-shaping the abnormal cartilage through ear correction surgery at Lift Plastic Surgery in Houston.
What happens during surgery?
Typically, an incision is made behind the ear where it is hidden, and the skin is lifted to expose the cartilage. The cartilage is then re-shaped with sutures. Sometimes cartilage is also borrowed from other parts of the ear and placed in the area of repair to strengthen it. If the ears “stick out”, extra cartilage is removed and/or the ears are set back against the skull with sutures. The incisions are closed with absorbable sutures and covered in skin glue.
What will my recovery be like? A head wrap dressing is applied at the time of surgery which can be removed after 2 days, and then you may shower. You will be instructed to wear a soft headband to help keep the shape and position of the ear and protect it from trauma for 2 weeks, and then an additional 2-3 weeks at night. You must refrain from exercise or vigorous activity for several weeks after surgery to prevent bleeding, swelling and trauma to the ears while they are healing.
Are the results permanent? In most cases the results are durable, but it is possible for there to be some relapse to the old shape of the ear. This is more common in situations where the ears are more severely deformed at baseline.
