Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) Specialist
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, can reset the balance and anatomy of your abdomen by removing extra fat and skin through an incision hidden in your bikini line. At Lift Plastic Surgery, Shitel Patel, MD, works with his patients in Houston and Webster, Texas, to create bellies that look great both in and out of clothes. What is a tummy tuck?
If you’ve recently lost considerable weight or had a child, you may be left with extra folds of skin, as well as separated abdominal muscles. The end result is that your tummy isn’t as tight and toned as it used to be. For cases such as these, Lift Plastic Surgery offers tummy tuck procedures to remove the excess skin and tighten up your abdominal muscles.
Dr. Patel and Dr. Wegge perform two types of tummy tucks at Lift Plastic Surgery, full and mini.
Full tummy tuck: In this procedure, your surgeon makes an incision from hip to hip along your lower abdomen in order to remove excess skin above and below your belly button and tighten your abdominal muscles. Your doctor also uses liposuction to remove stubborn fat from the area.
Mini abdominoplasty: If you get a mini tummy tuck, your surgeon makes a smaller incision and removes excess tissue beneath your belly button and tightens your lower abdominal muscles.
How is a tummy tuck performed?
After your doctor makes a low incision from hip to hip, they lift your fat and skin off the muscles of your abdominal wall. At this point, your doctor may use liposuction to help contour your waist if necessary. Then they tighten your abdominal muscles with permanent sutures and pull the skin down taut to remove any excess. In order to allow your belly button to come out, they make a new incision.
To secure everything, your surgeon places special sutures between your fat and your abdominal wall to help decrease fluid buildup and recreate the normal anatomic lines of the abdomen.
In the last step, your doctor places drains in the area and closes your incisions with absorbable sutures, covering them with tape and skin glue. The doctor then places you in a compression garment and, depending on your preference, you can either go home or stay the night in the hospital.
In order to spare you a second surgery, the plastic surgeons at Lift Plastic Surgery are also able to repair hernias at the same time you’re having your tummy tuck procedure. This means you spend less time recovering and more time enjoying your new body.
What is recovery like following tummy tuck surgery?
After your tummy tuck with Lift Plastic Surgery, you go home with drains, which usually stay in place for one to two weeks, but you can start showering the day after surgery. You should expect some discomfort following surgery, which feels like muscle soreness after a workout.
For the next several weeks, you won't be able to stand up straight, and you must stay flexed at the waist until your abdominal skin stretches out.
You must also wear a compression garment at all times (other than showering) for the first six weeks to limit swelling and improve your results, and you should also avoid exercise during this time.
